What happens when love fades? That’s the familiar but eternal question that drives Hope Gap, a modest, tasteful family drama in which a son learns that he knows nothing about his mother and fears he’s turning into his father. Soon to celebrate their 29th wedding anniversary, Grace (Annette Bening) and Edward (Bill Nighy) have reached an uncomfortable emotional impasse: She wants him to be more engaged in their relationship, but he can’t summon the effort. Beckoning their adult son Jamie (Josh O’Connor) to their seaside home, Edward prepares to deliver difficult news that will profoundly affect each member of this melancholy family. Bening is superb as a retiree whose shock at her disengaged husband inspires a suite of conflicting emotions. Even when the characters are at odds, Bening and Nighy silently communicate the pained bonds that still hold them together.—Screen Daily

“An affecting, well-acted and timely film”— Flickering Myth “Bening is the film's shining beacon but "Hope Gap" is good beyond her. Nicholson offers a tender perspective of something that feels true to life, tender and solid.” Stabroek NewsCast Annette Bening, Bill Nighy, Josh O'Connor
