Cinecenta will be joining theatres across BC for the Opening Night launch of this year's 39th Vancouver International Film Festival on Sept 24, with a screening of MONKEY BEACH. In addition to the film’s 103 minute runtime, VIFF will also be including enrichment materials exclusive to this Opening Night Festival Launch: Indigenous Welcome Song; Greetings from the Government of Canada and from the Mayor of Vancouver; Messages from VIFF's Chair and Executive Director; and a short introduction from director Loretta Todd and/or author Eden Robinson. (Prospective running time: 15 mins)

VIFF also hopes to include an afterword conversation piece between Eden Robinson and Loretta Todd (with a running time 10-15 mins), tba.

Film Synopsis:

Abandoning East Van for Kitimaat Village, Lisa (Grace Dove) must save her brother (Joel Oulette) from a tragic fate she's foreseen since childhood. Granted, there’s also the matter of contending with the mystical creatures in the nearby woods. Adapting Eden Robinson’s book, Loretta Sarah Todd crafts a modern epic about reconnecting with the land, its denizens and the secrets it holds. Monkey Beach is also a testament to Indigenous women’s ability to not just endure trials but emerge from them empowered.
