In his welcome to the DH2009 conference at University of Maryland, Neil Fraistat memorably declared ‘This is our time’. His prediction has proved to be correct. The Centernet map now shows 196 DH centres across the world, and the foundation of a new centre is not not seen as particularly innovative or noteworthy. How have we moved from niche discipline to international ubiquity in such a short time? Is DH simply this decade’s big thing, or are we here to stay? What are the reasons for success, and what can we learn in terms of continuing our endeavours and making them sustainable? This talk will address these questions by considering institutional models of DH activity, and examining the challenges we face now we have reached the end of the beginning.
