Melina Matsoukas · United States · 2019 · 132 mins · 14A CC

This immersive, devastating film is at once a taut on-the-run road movie; a mesmerizing reflection of a bitterly divided contemporary America; and a delicate, slow-burning love story. Queen & Slim stars Daniel Kaluuya as Slim, a Costco worker who is stopped for a minor traffic violation while on a first date with Queen, a criminal defense attorney (Jodie Turner-Smith). Things take a deadly turn when a violent altercation with the cop sends the couple on the run. Two-time Grammy-winner Melina Matsoukas, who directed HBO’s Insecure, as well as Beyoncé’s Formation video, is hoping her feature film directorial debut gets people talking. “We created this film to honor those black lives, people who have lost their lives because of police brutality and try to bring that conversation to the table,” Matsoukas said. “But the main theme of this film is love and how in our community as black people that’s our best power to fight against injustice.”—Variety
“Queen & Slim is one of those increasingly rare movies that should leave audiences discussing it after they exit the theater. Yet if the film derives power from its broader context, there's strength in the journey as well as the destination.”—“A potent love story for our times.” Detroit News"A thrilling debut for director Melina Matsoukas. You’ll fall in love with this couple." FilmWeekCast Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bokeem Woodbine
